Name: Yui Kusanagi
Canon: Kamigami no Asobi
PB/Image:
Canon Point: After Ep.10
Gender & Sex: F/F
Age: 17
Birthdate/Sign: October 2nd / Libra. Not canon, as Yui is the only character who does not get an official birthdate. Using base traits from the descriptions provided by the moderators and repeatedly occurring traits from a couple of Horoscope websites, I made a nice little chart to determine which basic traits fit Yui best. After which I went through and found more detailed explanations of personality characteristics for that sign (Libra) and matched them with examples of Yui's behavior:
POSITIVE ATTRIBUTE
NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTE
NEUTRAL ATTRIBUTE
"LIBRA WOMEN" TRAITS
Elegant and attractive (A given for an otome MC, but Yui exhibits it in terms of her traditional behavior, her appearance is always well-kempt)
Courteous (Uses polite language, always uses appropriate honorifics even with people she’s close to like the gods. Yui tries not to step out of turn.)
Not over the top (Even when she shouts or gets excited or scared, she doesn't go all SDUGHORUSLGHSLDH!! anime style. Faces sure, but she’s not the type of person you can hear five blocks away when something unexpected happens.)
Good at smoothing situations. (Gets Zeus to let up on Takeru after he broke his restraints to save her, finding ways to get the gods who refused to attend events/classes to play along, attempting to offer alternative solutions to problems.)
Like comforts (Friendship with Melissa, enjoys the nice settings and complains about Zeus's flippant weather changes but never complains about how nice the rooms and food are.)
Believe in equality in relationships. (Yui likes to consider herself equal even with the gods and tries to treat them all equally, despite being a human. She'll tell them when they're wrong and compliment them when they're right.)
Avoid confrontations and goes along with others too much. (Yui gets swept up in others' intentions a lot, sometimes agreeing politely to things while she's mentally freaking out and trying to figure out what's going on, such as when Loki was harassing her at the barbeque.)
Can be straight-forward and sometimes harsh, but with good intentions. (Yui speaks her mind when something really needs to be said. This goes for with all the gods she is classmates with as well as Zeus, despite that he could "expel" her-- which in their case means getting turned into a stone statue for all eternity)
Indecisive, works all information in and still second-guesses self (Demonstrated most effectively when Yui is shown not knowing what she wants to do with her life at the beginning of the series.)
Flexible in beliefs, if she's wrong she'll change her viewpoint. (She doesn't always understand all of the gods right away, though she tends to give them the benefit of the doubt. However, she adapts pretty quickly. A good example is when Loki is treating her like crap, but as soon as she understands why and understands that he has decent motivations regarding Balder, she's very accepting of it.)
Generally balanced individuals, but can be thrown off from time to time. (In Yui's case, she gets sleepy or she'll look down and make doe-eyes until she's able to help or the problem is fixed.)
Mature yet bubbly (Yui is both of these in general. She keeps a chipper, optimistic attitude and works with Apollon to try to make the school a better place so everyone can graduate together. She takes things in stride in a somewhat mature fashion.)
Loyal friend (If Yui is your friend she will stand by your side regardless of what is to come. Good examples are defending Takeru and trying to reach Balder when he goes god-of-destruction mode despite how dangerous it is.)
Does not interfere with privacy (Despite that she's worried, Yui won't usually ask for private information until it's offered to her. She always has an open ear when it is and takes it to heart, but she's not the type to pressure someone into telling her. Sometimes this does mean that she ends up standing around worried until someone fills her in, however, which can be something of a problem if no one wants to tell her.)
LIBRA TRAITS SHARED BETWEEN GENDERS AND NOT MENTIONED ABOVE
Hates to stay alone (Yui is always surrounded by the gods, spending a lot of time with them, and when she isn't she spends time with Melissa. If she had to spend more time with herself she would probably get lonely, especially considering that her primary concerns when she first arrived at Zeus’s garden were getting back to her parents and friends rather than worried that she got transported to another entire world and she was lost).
Initiate conversations and socialize, love teamwork (Even with the more difficult gods, she goes out of her way to be friendly with them and take an interest in what they like to do, joining in frequently and encouraging them to join in group activities along with Apollon.)
Often settle disputes and have a keen sense of justice (Tends to help with arguments, including standing up to Zeus when he's being unfair on multiple occasions. Is the peacekeeper between the gods in some ways and will go out of her way to make sure that one of her friends is okay even if that means letting their dead girlfriend possess her for a while).
Enjoy communicating thoughts and feelings to others (Yui expresses how much she enjoys those around her and speaks her mind frequently. She'll even go out of her way to make things that someone loves to bond with them, such as Hades's love of strawberries and rice cakes.)
Not good at arguing, often feels very bad when fighting with a friend because Libra doesn't want to upset anyone (Yui wonders what she did wrong when someone like Loki starts completely screwing with her, assuming that she was the one at fault when he was doing it to keep her away from Balder for both of their safety later in the series.)
Gullible (Yui continually falls for Loki’s tricks, for example, as with Loki tossing her smoke bomb candy, when Loki sticks Tsukito and her together with magical rings that electrocute anyone who tries to take them off until she and Tsukito understand each other, when Loki pulls her into an alley and implies he wants to “make memories” with her and his innuendo completely passes her by while she just wants everyone to be happy.)
OTHER LIBRA STUFF
Key planet for the first Decan of Libra is Venus. Focus on love and appreciation of beautiful things and creating a loving balance between the people that they know. (This is key in Yui’s behavior as the essential lynchpin between the gods in Zeus’s garden as she is the one who goes out of her way more often than not to make sure everyone is included. Even when she’s being naive with Loki, who was attempting to imply they should have relations behind the booths at the Christmas market, her main desire is to make sure that everyone graduates together and she seems extremely pleased about the opportunity to make memories with him… even if he was trying to scare her into staying away from Balder by threatening something else.)
They are in the Seventh House (Partners) which is indicative of how well they get along with others. (Yui gets along with literally all of the gods, even the ones she doesn’t have routes with, and cares about them deeply. Probably the only one who she doesn’t actively get along with is Zeus, and that’s mostly because he doesn’t spend time with the rest of the group despite lording it over them in an unfair manner that she views as oppressive to the rest of the group. Despite this, she still respects him unless he goes too far.)
Libra’s element is air, which can indicate occasional spontaneity in actions. In Yui’s case, this is usually through how she is willing to try new things or go above and beyond what she is asked to do when no one expects her to. This includes training with Takeru, finding out what Hades’s favorite food is and making it for him or getting together with the others to find a way to counteract his bad luck, or even her strange verbal guess when she first arrived in the garden that she accidentally “time leaped.” Right after meeting Apollon, she even goes on a ride on his Pegasus despite that she’s barely met him. Sometimes, she just goes spontaneous.
Tattoo: Located on the small of her back, the Libra sign (♎) is two inches wide.
Suitability: Yui is the main character of an otome game in which she literally goes into romantic routes with the various male gods. She’s compatible with a large number of people, she’s willing to try new things, and it is most certainly the type of series that has no problem with them getting together in relationships. It’s a reverse harem series and Yui is mature enough to deal with the problems that will be presented in Ophiuchus, even if she is somewhat naive and traditional at heart. She is nearly 18 and if time had not stopped in the series, it’s likely that she would have turned it during the course of the series if she had a canon birthday. (They are meant to be in the Garden for at least 1 year, though the seasons are subject to Zeus’s whims.) Though she can be easily embarrassed, she tends to go with the flow and does end up in situations that involve a lot of touching canonly as well as an entire flock of boys nearly killing each other to marry her fictionally in a play that she plays Cinderella during. Not to mention, her homeroom teacher Thoth pins her to a wall every episode so she won’t even blink at something like that.
Power: Yui does not have a canon power, as she is human. She will take the Healing / Potions & Medicines ability from under the Air Element category. This fits her well because she is the type of person who tries to be of use to others all the time, so she will be right at home trying to make things to help others.
Personality: Yui Kusanagi is the type of girl who puts others ahead of herself. She goes out of her way to bring peace to situations such as gathering the gods who refuse to go to class, stepping in to try to make sure that Takeru doesn't get expelled for something that isn't his fault. Yui is a supportive person, often making sure to show her friends that she thinks what they do is wonderful like Hades's astronomy or Dionysus's gardening. When they have difficulties she'll be there for them, like with Apollon's dead girlfriend issues or trying to help find an alternative to Loki having to kill Balder.
Yui exhibits a special level of determination when it comes to getting people to follow their responsibilities. Whether it's taking something of a leadership role beside Apollon (student council president) to insure everyone participates in events or going out of her way to stubbornly train every morning with the god of the sea regardless of the weather. Despite this determination and more traditional mindset, she is surprisingly adaptable. A lot of it is probably out of necessity (it becomes a necessity when you get kidnapped by Zeus to come tutor a bunch of out-of-touch gods in how to understand human beings) but she tends to get swept up in all sorts of things.
After the initial resistance, Yui fairly quickly decides that if Zeus wants her to help and they can't get out otherwise, then she'll help. After that, she gets pulled into things incredibly easily, such as Balder's claims that she has to have dinner with him every night to make up for the fact that she's in another group, or tricked into situations such as being bound to Tsukito by Loki's ring or when Loki plays tricks on her in general but adjusts to them rather quickly, or even getting pinned to the wall by her teacher, Thoth, for little to no reason. She isn't completely calm about everything, and does panic from time to time, but a lot of it is internal or made in short bursts or cover it up with a quick laugh. She does for the most part seem to at least TRY keep her head and tends to be the voice of reason within the group, not accusing anyone of being stupid or ridiculous with their frankly ridiculous ideas, but instead trying to subtly shift things toward a better solution. The best example of this is when the gods had settled on Cinderella with the idea that she would be Cinderella and one of them would get to marry her (in the play) and had all started arguing over who the prince would be. When they rejected her idea of just doing another play, she got them all to draw sticks despite objections to decide who would get what part. This also shows that she has a sense of fairness as well, and that she included herself in this drawing that she viewed all of them as on equal footing instead of them as gods and her as a human. Yui has shown her belief in them all being equal despite their differences on many occasions.
That doesn't mean, of course, that she always stands down and goes along with what's happening. Yui has a line and that line can be crossed- usually by Zeus when he does things like threaten to expel Takeru for breaking his binds to protect her or refuse to help his own son because he thinks there's nothing that can be done, even though Yui manages. This is when she shows how courageous she is, standing up to the god of gods despite that he's already threatened to turn anyone who breaks his rules to stone. Her courage is always reflected in her belief in standing up for what's right or protecting her friends. If someone really crosses her line, she has a serious temper that comes out and she has no problem laying down the law with a bit of yelling and truth bombs that not everyone wants to hear.
Balder also notes that on regular occasions Yui has no problem telling him when something he's doing is out of bounds or if he's doing a good job in a way that doesn't require her to get set off. She's a vocal person who has no problem both rewarding others for a good job and scolding them when they're wrong in a very kind manner. Yui is very attentive to each of them in order to help them through their issues, problems, and misunderstandings in order to gain a better understanding of each of them and help them to understand both human emotions and themselves better.
Something of an idealist and an optimist, Yui often hopes for the best out of situations and works toward a better future. One of her primary motivations is that everyone can get along together and, despite their differences, graduate together. Over time, this becomes a sentiment that is shared by the group instead of just her and on a level of more than just "Zeus said we had to." She cares immensely about each of the gods and isn't afraid to risk her life to save any one of them, despite that they have much greater power than she does. This also means that sometimes she can bury her emotions in order to bear their problems and be the strong one, though she usually does have at least one person to talk them out with so that she doesn't have to stress most of her friends out with her problems. In the series, a talking ragdoll that Zeus made to look after Yui, Melissa, takes care of this role with her. Yui needs a confidant, especially one who she doesn't have to worry about trying to help, in order to keep her own stress levels in check. If it's a big enough problem that she can't get over it just by talking, she just ends up getting sleepy, overworked, and looks generally down until the problem is fixed.
Despite all of this, when it comes to a situation in which she isn't given a responsibility, she doesn't always know what to do. She's always grown up with a responsibility being given to her. Yui's family owns a temple, and thus most of her work and responsibilities in the real world had drawn from that. She admitted her own indecisiveness in the first episode of the series when speaking with her human friends about what she planned to do in the future. She honestly didn't know, despite that she practiced her iaido daily and she had the option of taking over the temple. When it comes to herself and her future, Yui clearly has no idea what to do. She's got convictions when it comes to morals that she'll stick to unless it seems as though it's beneficial to otherwise, but when it comes to herself she doesn't appear to have a sense of direction. Most of her life is something that she seems to dedicate to others either as a result or cause of this behavior (possibly both), considering that her first concern even when she was transported to a strange world that wasn't her own was that her parents and friends would be worried about her, rather than that she was lost, alone, and potentially in a dangerous situation.
Her upbringing also makes sure that she remains courteous and polite with everyone. Even despite being friends with each of the gods by the end of the series, she still refers to them as "_____-san." She's clearly polite and well-behaved and she doesn't use slang terms. This goes hand-in-hand with not butting in where she doesn't belong, which can be problematic when a problem needs to be solved. Often times she might wait around for someone to come to her with their problems or wait until someone else fills in the answers, which means that if no one is willing to offer up an explanation, she can get left out in the dark trying to figure out what she can do to help a situation she doesn't know much about. In most cases, she does have people who will come to her and fill in the blanks, but if someone didn't, she might be at a loss. That doesn't mean that she'll never ask anyone about themselves, but it does mean that if it's clearly something distressing, she won't pressure someone into talking about it because she doesn't want to create conflict. This can result in it being more difficult with someone who refuses to come out of their shell.
Her reliance on other people to provide her with explanations for things can lead to trouble from time to time, as she is somewhat gullible. This occurs particularly when it comes to Loki, who enjoys pulling tricks on her and even at one point pulls her into an alley to essentially imply they should have sex during the Christmas market... and it totally passes her by because he used an innuendo instead of saying it directly. Said innuendo played directly into her desire for everyone to make memories together and graduate, showing how naive she can be with her good intentions to the point of potentially putting herself in danger.
She has her flaws and her strengths and she tends to put others ahead of herself to a fault. She is the type of person who comes from tradition, but knows when to adapt in order to move forward and do what she has to to keep everyone she cares about safe. She can be naive and indecisive, but she always tries to be straight-forward and honest when she knows her direction. Overall, Yui Kusanagi is just a good person in strange situations.

This is just an idea, but.. I know that a lot of the areas around here are with empty land, but it can't all be barren right? It might be a long shot, but it might be easier if we started a community garden. It will probably be a lot of work to clean up some of that area that looks like it used to be a farm.
[There's a smile in her voice as she continues, as though she's glad to have at least decided on a project. It's something to do here more than she was and something she can try to improve this place with. ]
We can start a small vegetable garden to see if there's any way to get it fertile again. I might not be as good at gardening as Dionysus-san was, but even I can give it a shot. Besides, a healthy diet is known to improve the quality and certain, ah.. Certain functions for "worshipping," so to speak!
[ There's a little uncertain laugh. Maybe she was shy about talking about it out loud, but she had certainly accepted the circumstances and was getting better about it. Which is why despite the slight waver in her voice, she manages to recover fairly quickly. ]
Well, would anyone interested in helping?
"Cebalrai (logs)" Third-Person Prose Entry:
One of Yui's first tasks when she arrived after reading the letter was to find a place to stay. The situation here was very different from the last place that she was staying, however.. If it was anything similar, chances were that there wouldn't be anyone she knew here at all. It'd been a few days since she had arrived and after talking with a couple of people, she was more than apprehensive about this place.
What they were asking for as "worship" was something vastly different from what the last gods she'd been whisked away to another world with had. She wasn't here to help gods understand humans, she was here to.. to-- Her face flushed as she thought about it again as she stood in the threshold of what appeared to be an abandoned home, but the heat in her face only made her realize more how cold the air around her was. Yui wasn't against having a relationship with someone, that much was for certain, but it'd been a week and a half and she was already starting to feel sluggish. She knew that she would eventually find a way to warm up to the idea, especially given the dedication that Tsukito was given in and the possibility that people the both of them cared about were in danger. She didn't doubt that- the last thing that she remembered was Balder falling unconscious at Loki's shouting. Something was definitely wrong, and if these gods could help save even other gods, Yui wouldn't hesitate to put the values regarding intimate relationships she'd grown up with on the backburner...
Honestly, she just hoped that she could get attached enough to someone soon to feel comfortable with it! Yui sighed as she kneeled down, picking up a basket that she'd found. It was broken when she'd found it, but she'd managed to fix it up well enough that she could carry wood scraps too and from the living space she was staying in. It was the best way to warm the place up in a less intimate sense. Once the basket was in her arms, she gave the door a determined look. She would just have to do what she could until she figured out how to go about this, and that meant making sure that there was warmth and hopefully food. The best she could do right now was her own best, and that was what she would go for. Even if the gods here were different from the kind ones she encountered at Zeus's garden, that didn't mean that she couldn't make memories with the people here. But survival was an important first step.
And so Yui took that first step, heading out the pseudo-door with her best intentions and a stick she'd sharpened on a rock at her side, just in case she needed to defend herself. She didn't know what sorts of things were out there, after all, and there were people who would worry if she didn't come back safely. It might not have been much, but that step? It was in the right direction as far as Yui was concerned. She supposed the Twelve were right about one thing-- her caretakers’ nature was definitely something that would keep her going through this kind of place.
